If you are very close to him, he can see you but his vision is not good enough for him to learn sign language. He can see bright colours, white and contrasting colours for example an orange ball on grass or a black toy on a white kitchen floor.
His back legs are quite unsteady and look too big for him. He loves to run around the garden but after a while always ends up in a heap as his back legs can't keep up with his front legs and brain.
Despite all his problems he is always happy, always wanting to do things and loves every body.
He is a very special little boy who needs a lot of cuddles and time.

We drove to Llanelli (after having a house check) to see if Bing would get on with our other dog Darry a 2 and 1/2 year old male yellow Labrador. We both fell in love with Bing as soon as we saw him and Darry didn't pay any attention to him which was good enough for us. Bing was laying outside asleep in the sun. We all walked over to the little white fluffy puppy but we couldn't wake him and realised he is 100% deaf. To wake him we have to either shake him quite hard, if it is light make a shadow over him or if its dark turn a light on.
Bing was fostered by a wonderful lady called Monica since he was 6 weeks old. She also was fostering quite a few other dogs and 20-30 cats as well as Bing.
He was great in the car on the way home and every time we went under a bridge he would snap at the shadows.
Bing and Darry are now the best of friends and love playing together.
How did Darry react to Bing's initial presence in the home?
When we got home Darry sniffed Bing all over for hours and kept looking at me as if to say what is going on? The next day when Darry realized Bing was still here again he looked at me to say "when is he going home?" 2-3 days later Darry was looking for Bing as soon as he woke up. 4-5 days they were and are still inseparable.
Please email Bing bingaug2007@aol.com
We have had a few little accidents in the house during the first 3-4 days, but Darry taught him to go outside and he has done so ever since and is now 100% house trained in any house.
He loves bones, toys and anything he can chew. He gets bored very easily and can be destructive if he has nothing to do or left on his own for 5 seconds!!
We have taken Bing and Darry to a few dog shows and Bing has come 4th for best rescue, 4th for cutest pup, 3rd for fancy dress, 2nd for best trick and 1st for special dogs with disabilities.
He loves all attention, all dogs and they are great places for him to socialise.
He has been to puppy training classes for 8 weeks which again is great for socialisation.
How did Bing react to Darry?
The first time he saw Darry we could all tell he loved him. He would follow him everywhere with an expression on his face that said "what are we going to do now, what else are you going to show me?"
To see a video of Bing at Many tears before we adopted him please go to http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=gRsuk-VDO4A

Although he loves other dogs some dogs don't like him because they can sense there is something wrong and one day whilst out on a walk, a dog came out from no where and attacked him, the owner did nothing and just ran off. My screaming scared the dog and it ran after its owner. He had a few cuts on his face and eyes and was very upset but luckily this has not put him off other dogs. I took him straight to the vets because the problem with dog bites is you don't know how deep they are and also the animal that was bitten could go into shock. Bing was checked over and he was fine.
Since
Do you think it is important that Bing went to a home with another dog?
Yes, Bing needs another dog to show him dog things and to play dog games. He still wants cuddles but as there are two of us, they can have cuddles when ever they want. Bing was taken away from his mother and siblings at 6 weeks old and so missed out on lots of things which Darry is now teaching him. He needs another dog to hear and see for him when humans try to communicate but dogs can communicate with each other without sound. So I tell Darry and Darry tells Bing.
To date we have spent around £1320.00 on him.
I need your help, please email me if:
- Anyone in the Northamptonshire area could help Bing with a physical and mental activity (Agility, sheep herding) There is no reason why he should sit at home, he loves life just as much as every other B Collie.
- I would love for him to go swimming to help strengthen his back legs
- Or if you just have some questions you want to ask.
PLEASE EMAIL BING Bingaug2007@aol.com
We took Bing out on November 5th to a firework display. Obviously he couldn't hear them but he could see them. When ever the Moon is out he loves to look at it and sometimes jumps up to try and get it. He really loved the fireworks and was also trying to jump up and catch them. Darry stayed at home because he doesn't like fireworks. We left all the lights on in our house, the curtains shut and the TV on so he couldn't hear the fireworks.
Do you think that dogs that are disabled as Bing are a sign that
people should be more responsible when breeding?
Yes, I have been told by most vets puppy's that are not developed correctly usually don't survive. But if they do the mother will not feed them and they will die. Or the breeders will take the poorly puppy to the vets to be euthanized. Bing is a miracle and lucky to be alive. Some might say "is it fair" but Bing has a life, a very happy life. He is not suffering and is not in any pain. He doesn't know he cant hear or cant see as this is all he has ever known. "Should Bing have been PTS" If you know the puppy is not suffering and you can find it a home (not just put it in kennels and hope someone will have it) Then fine. But otherwise no, euthanasia would be best as nothing should ever suffer. "Did Bing's breeders do the right thing by Bing" In this case I think they did but they must not EVER breed from the same two dogs again!!!
so Bing can have the best life possible. All the money will go towards:
- A dog trainer (now got)
- A Vibrating collar with remote (now got)
- Hydrotherapy lessons
- Seeing a specialist about his hearing
- An activity that will stimulate his brain
- Occasional Grooming (when his coat turns from white to grey ha ha)
- All vet bills
- Neutering ?
- Any toy that he can see
- And not forgetting his favourite hide bones!!
Thank you to everyone who came especially Simon and David, Lisa and her daughter and everyone else from the Village.
The Bing Bazaar raised £76.50 in total !!!!! (£56.50 after the cost of the hall)

Watching the YouTube footage of Bing, it's hard to tell that he can't
see or hear. Do you find that his natural instincts help him manage?
Yes, The first time we saw Bing I said to his foster mum "Are you sure he is deaf and blind?" I expected him to be very slow and deliberate and not running round like a mad thing. I also never expected him to pull on the lead, again I thought he would walk by my side as he wouldn't know where he was going. But he pulls like a train.
With Bing it is trial and error, he will run and if he runs into something, he picks himself up and thinks "ok now I know there is something there" We tried so hard but we cant always keep up with him. We obviously don't want him running into things but cant always stop him but he has never really hurt himself as he is very floppy.
I have found a dog trainer who is willing to teach Bing www.theostewart-doglistener.co.uk When I mentioned everything about Bing and the Bing Bazaar, Theo said she would train Bing half Price!!!
She has been so kind and helpful and is always there on the phone or email if and when I need her.Theo came over to see Bing on the 21st November 2007 at 6.30pm and didn't leave until 10.45pm. Theo was calm and treated Bing like a normal dog. Just because he is deaf and 90% blind doesn't mean he can jump up people and do what he wants. Instead
I have always known Bing can be like a normal dog and Theo confirmed it!!
Theo gave me THE DOG LISTENER by Jan Fennell. which I am reading, it is very interesting and worth reading.
www.janfennellthedoglistener.com
I have noticed when he has an injection or cuts himself he really bleeds and as I work in a emergency vets and see cuts and injections all the time I know what is "normal" I took him to my day time Vets where the receptionists and nurses are always so kind to him to have some blood tests to see if he has a blood clotting disorder.
They have been sent off to a lab and I will get the results on Monday 26th Nov. 2007. They are willing to neuter him but they will have blood ready and may need to keep him in for 24 hours but I don't think it is worth the risk. I do not want him to bleed to death for something he doesn't have to have done.
My vets rang me on 28th November 2007 to say the blood results have come back and are normal. But to be sure they want to cut his gum to see how long it bleeds for but they want to do that under GA. If its OK then he will have to come back and be put under again for the operation. They said they would like to keep him in over night and he may have to be transfered to the emergency over night vets (where I work) for them to look after.
Again I'm thinking thats two lots of general anesthetic and a big operation????

Bing can now walk up and down the stairs (Friday 16th November) but it really takes it out of him. he sticks his tongue out in concentration but is so proud of himself when he gets to the top/bottom.
I will let him walk up and down the stairs once every 3-4 days. My boyfriend sits at the top of the stairs and I stand at the bottom. We never make him if he doesn't want to. We mostly find he wants to go upstairs when he sees Darry go up. We let him so that it might improve the muscles in his back legs a little. Darry gets so happy when Bing gets to the top and seems proud of him too.
Darry helps me so much when it comes to Bing. I remember once a few weeks ago my Boyfriend and I had been shopping and he had bought a cooked chicken for himself and the dogs. Bing was outside but Darry was in the kitchen. As soon as my boyfriend got the chicken out and started cutting bits off it Darry ran off. We both looked at each other very confused as Darry will do anything for chicken and always sits as soon as he can smell it . We watched Darry run into the garden and it was almost as if he said "Bing there is chicken in the kitchen, quick come in" they both ran in as fast as they could and then both sat ready. We could not believe our eyes as we thought Darry would only be to glad Bing wasn't there as that would mean more chicken for him.
Since Theo has come over Bing is allot calmer. Today (1st Dec) we were all in the living room watching Xfactor. My boyfriend was taking and we noticed that when he said Danny minogue Bing would tilt his head. We then realised he thought we were saying Darry not Danny. And every time we said Darry he would tilt his head. At the time he was calmer than he had ever been. And so, when he is stressed or playing and running around he is totally deaf and almost 100% blind, but when he is calm his eye site is much better and although he doesn't know where the sounds are coming from or what we are saying he can hear something.
I was out and about and I saw this jumper and knew Bing would love it. Don't get me wrong I am not one of these dog owners who dresses their dog up all the time like a little toy. To be honest I don't really agree with that kind of thing. But to wear once or twice for a few minutes is fun and Bing has this look on his face like he is important and has a job to do.
When we first had him, he would jump up and snap the air all the time and I mean all the time. We would let Bing and Darry into the garden and Bing would stand just on the grass and he would bark and fly catch and that would be it. We knew that collies did this sometimes but this was almost 80% of the time. We took him to my work and spoke to a vet and nurse and was told he could have a problem with his brain and possibly have a brain tumour. I was devastated. I cried all the way home, rang all my friends and family and cried myself to sleep that night. Although I am not a vet or nurse I still thought this may be the case in a normal dog, but I felt his fly catching was something he did to entertain himself in his dark and silent world.
Does Bing's personality enable him to overcome his limitations?
Defiantly. He wants to learn and be as normal as Darry. If he could talk he would say " I can do it, watch me everyone, see I am a good boy, what's next to do, what can you teach me now" He has a very active brain and from the second he wakes up he runs, he has no idea where but just runs, wags his tail and says "right what have a missed."
As the days and weeks went by he was snapping less and less and he was paying more attention to us and Darry. He seemed to be coming out of his own little world more and more. He was fly catching now about 50-60% of the time. When we took him to the eye specialist he was doing it in front of the vet and the vet also was unsure why he was doing this. He very kindly called in a neurologist who took Bing away for 15-20mins. And their verdict was he does not have anything wrong with his brain, this is just something he does when he is stressed or anxious. That was the best news I had ever received and so spent the evening ringing everyone and telling them the good news.
Today 5th Dec 07 I received an email from three wonderful caring people called Jane, Gill and Glynness saying they unfortunately couldn't make the Bing Bazaar but they have put some money together and bought Bing and Darry some toys. (They saw my Bazaar poster and emailed me through the web site)
We met Jane and Gill for the first time in the car park of Welland Valley feeds in Market Harborough 7th Dec 07 and were given 2 Carrier bags full of brand new toys.
When we got home and had a look in the bags, we couldn't believe how much they had given Bing and Darry.
A massive thank you to Jane, Gill and Jane's mother Glynness for being so kind and thoughtful and for making Bing's Christmas. Opening the ball and seeing how exited and happy bing was because of the thoughtfulness of others, almost made me cry. They both love their treat balls which keeps them busy for ages :)
So thanks again and I hope you like your Bing badges!!
When ever people meet Bing they always say to me " You should see if the papers would be interested in writing about Bing / You should email the local news and see if they will do a story on him?" At first I thought yes I suppose I could email some people but never got round to it. But more and more people kept telling me to so I decided to start emailing.
As soon as anything is confirmed I will update the website. (So come on people get back to me you wont be disappointed I promise)
Today 10th Dec Bing only fly catches when he is stressed and cant have his own way. which some days is never. If he is being to much and running around the living room, knocking everything over we hold his collar until he calms down which is called calm freeze www.pips-dog-blog.blogspot.com
At first it took a few hours for him to calm down but eventually he sighed an
Just some advice. Have a look at your dog or cats gums when they are well and healthy, the pink part. If there are dark or black parts just find a pink bit and remember the colour. Then if you animal is ill look at their gums the paler they are the more they will need to see a vet. If they are white/blue get to your vets NOW!!!
Thursday 13th we woke up to find that Bing's eye was brown and again he is totally blind. He was just about OK going out into the garden for a wee during the day, but when it got dark he didn't want to go not even with Darry next to him. We had to put him on a lead and go out with him which is no fun in this cold weather. He was looking in my direction, couldn't see me
but knew I was there and his little face said "I don't want this eye anymore, it keeps failing me, can I have a eye that works for Christmas please mum, I have been really good." He
Friday 14th Dec 2007 Bing's eye is now green and he has some sight. probably about 3-4% We are so pleased but Bing is still very quiet.
Saturday 15th Dec Bing is back. His eye is a green blue colour but he can see about 7-8% and is really making up for it. Unfortunately he came running in from the garden with grass stains on his eye and ear and has grazed his eye, where his eye brow is. He was not bothered at all, just so happy to see me.
When we look back at some of the old pictures we have of Bing, we can see how far he has come in the last 4-5 months. He used to walk almost flat on his back legs but now he walks on his paws. One of the main reasons for this is we changed his food onto hills puppy with chicken.. And I think that has made all the difference. www.hillspet.com
His tail would just hang down and he wouldn't really wag it very often. But now he is always wagging his tail, even when he is on his own playing with his toys, his tail is wagging.
I have heard from a dog Magazine who say they are going to write about Bing early next year. They have asked me lots of questions and I have sent them many pictures for them to choose the best ones of Bing and Darry. I will give all details of the Magazine and when Bing will be in it as soon as everything is sorted. Also I have a local newspaper who seem very interested in Bing too. Again when everything is finalised I will update you all.

Darry has asked me to tell you all that he has given blood. www.petbloodbankuk.org
Donors should have a good temperament, be aged between one and eight years old, weigh more than 25 kilos, should not have travelled abroad, should be up-to-date on all vaccinations and should be fit and healthy.
It is very easy. First he got weighed, then I answered a few questions, IE. Has he ever been abroad, received blood, on any medication etc. and then they took a little blood from his front leg. Then when all was well about 6 people lay him down and stoked him. When he was calm they then took the blood which took about 5 mins. They put a bandage round his neck which you have to take off as soon as you get home. He was given some food and had his heart rate and gums checked. When they were happy we could go. He was given a carrier bag of goodies. A ball, car sticker, biscuits etc and a bandanna. The blood is then checked for everything which would cost around £150 if you wanted that kind of test doing. The results are then sent to your own vets. We also got a blood card with Darrys blood type on it.
It is very easy and well worth doing if only for the £150 worth of blood tests. So come on give the pet blood bank a call as you just don't know, one day it might be your dog that needs the blood.
How has Darry helped Bing?
Darry has helped Bing in more ways than we will ever realize. We always thought that when a dog was wet, it would automatically shake to dry its self but Bing never would. He could be so wet, water would literally be dripping off him and he would just stand there. But one day when they were out in the garden in the rain, Darry came to the back door with Bing and as normal Darry shook himself. Bing tilted his head and we could see he was thinking and then to our surprise he shook himself a little. Now Bing knows exactly what to do to dry himself.
About 90% of dogs that see Bing are either frightened of him or want to kill him but Darry is not like all the other dogs, he loves Bing so much and now couldn't be without him. As you can see in the You Tube video, the dog in that was frightened of Bing.
BING IS GOING TO BE IN THE CHRONICLE AND ECHO NORTHAMPTON NEWSPAPER POSSIBLY CHRISTMAS EVE, BOXING DAY BUT DEFIANTLY NEXT WEEK. NO READ THE PAPER EVERYDAY AND HE HASN'T BEEN IN. I'M SURE HE WILL BE JUST DON'T KNOW WHEN. (29/12/07) www.northamptonchron.co.uk
BING IS IN THE PAPER TODAY 01/01/08 SO GO AND BUY ONE.!!!!! THANK YOU CARLY!
K9 MAGAZINE ARE GOING TO WRITE ABOUT BING EARLY NEXT YEAR. www.k9magazine.com THANK YOU SEAN! I have found out that Bing will be in issue 23 which is out on 31st Jan 2008. Cost £5 but they have 4 magazines out a year, spring, summer, autumn and winter which means you have 3 months to save up lol!
Taking all these pictures of Darry and Bing made me realize how photogenic Darry is. I can tell him where to sit, what to do and he will do it. He even sits still until I have taken the picture. But Bing, what a wiggle bum. I have to take about 20 pictures to get 1 half decent one. He is always walking and moving unless he is asleep. So Darry is now on a dog model website. www.petlondonmodels.com/current-models.html?model_sku=1614 He would be great at advertising a hatli or something like that. But obviously Bing is also available So if you want a dog model please email me :)
Once again thank you Carly. Page 2, I am very pleased. Just one little thing. Bing was not selectively bred to have a pure white coat. He is a blue Merle border collie and is only white with a pink eye (albino) because he has problems. If you have missed the paper please see the link www.northamptonchron.co.uk/news/Darry-just-loves-to-watch.3630475.jp
He is supposed to look like this. obvious when you compare, but a lot of people think he is a cross.
Please email Bingaug2007@aol.com
My Mum and dad (Bing's grand parents) came over at Christmas and Bing was trying to drink everyones drink. All he does is sniff and walk he doesn't look where he is walking his nose takes over and thats it. I remember one morning my boyfriend was eating breakfast cereal and I was talking to him. We could see Bing sniffing the air but he was in another room and we thought the breakfast cereal was safe. The next minute Bing ran over and put his head in the cereal and pushed the bowl with my boyfriend still holding it down. Bing tried to eat so fast that that the jumper my boyfriend was wearing was covered in milk. He tried to take the bowl off him but Bing's head was firmly in the cereal. He was shouting "help, oh my god " and all I could do was laugh. So this time with the beer I would show him it and he will hate it. But no he pulled a "that was sour" face but tried to drink it anyway. So all drinks now have to be out of reach.
Bing had lots of presents but bless him he didn't know how to open them. We tried to show him but he just didn't understand. Darry loves opening things and so Darry opened them and Bing, well, just run around the living room exited. We were saying what a shame poor Bing not opening presents but then we realised he loves ripping card board and paper and anything he is not supposed to so he either only rips things up when he is bored or has finally realised he is not supposed to rip things.
We were a little worried about Christmas day, presents and paper everywhere but I think it was just to messy for Bing, to much to destroy. When our house is tidy and there is say a letter on the table before you can count to 10 he has knocked it off and has part of it in his mouth and his paw on it ready to rip it in half. But he never touched a thing, in fact after a while he just lay down and eat a bone. The whole day wasn't to much for him though. We tried to make it as normal as possible as he does get stressed easily. Also he had a little bacon as an extra and that was it. Working for the emergency vets especially at Christmas we see so many dogs that have eaten to much at Christmas. And so my advice for dog owners at times like Christmas. Some dogs will keep eating and never seem to get full. And these are the dogs that you have to be most careful with. By all means give them a little treat but don't over do it. We have seen complete chicken legs being brought back up before and its not a pretty sight I can tell you.
Also I must mention this. If you have a medium to large breed of dog or you dog has a large chest like a Labrador. German Shepard etc. Then NEVER feed them before a walk.ALWAYS feed your dog well after or before a walk or exercise. click on the link for the reasons www.napoleon.org.uk/health/bloat.htm
We have found that Bing is very frightened of some bones and hide shoes. The first time I gave him a shoe, he crouched down weed himself and walked as low to the floor as possible across the kitchen and faced the corner with his back to me shaking. I stood there with the shoe in my hand in amazement. He had always eaten hide bones and so I couldn't understand. I walked over to him but he wouldn't even look at me. And so I had to put the shoe in another room before he would come out of the corner. But once Darry had eaten some of the shoe, he was still a little frightened of it but he picked it up and started eating it. This has happened with one other hide bone that was in the shape of a circle and again he only eat it after Darry.
Today 5th Jan 08 Bing pooed in the living room. He and Darry were running around the table as normal but then Bing just got into a pooing position and started. I ran over to him and walked him out into the garden and then shut the door. Now here was a test, I had to make sure Bing knew that pooing inside was wrong and that he only goes outside. To be honest I was very shocked, this was the first accident of any kind in 6 months.
I opened the back door and Bing was laying down, so I tapped him (which means follow me) and walked onto the garden. He walked in a very low manor and I pushed him gently onto the grass. He walked down the garden and then went for a wee. He ran back to me and tried to go straight past. I grabbed his collar, turned him around and pushed him back onto the grass. (To me and you I am saying no you haven't finished yet) He ran back down the garden , turned around, ran back to me but this time did not try and run past me. He just stood looking at me. I touched his collar and he ran back down the garden and this time went for a poo. Again he came back up to me, still quite low to the ground. I turned away from him and walked into the kitchen and he followed slowly. He did not think i was going to hurt him. He was just giving me respect and by lowering himself, he is acknowledging that I am pack leader, this is my house and that he is sorry.
If you have ever read a puppy book you will always read things like "Mistakes will happen; it’s all part of bringing up a puppy. Instead of getting annoyed with the pup or yourself, clean up any accidents which happen as quickly as possible, with the minimum of fuss." "Telling your puppy off for 'accidents' after the event will not help and may make things worse as he may avoid going to the toilet anywhere near you! " " Even if your puppy has defecated in front of you, do not say anything, just clean it up without a word." I have read the words but tonight made me realize, you really can tell dogs without words. They don't even need to see you are cross or angry etc they can feel it.
People often say to me. "How do you tell him no, or that he has done something good" And I say "The same way as you tell all dogs, cuddles, biscuits and isolation" So next time you are out with your dog on a lead and you see another dog coming. Don't think, oh my God here we go. Think that's OK its just another dog and I am in control. If you really mean it you dog will know it.
When he got inside I praised him for going outside and then he carried on playing just as normal. I don't think he will ever mess inside again. But we will just have to wait and see?
Yesterday Jan 10th 08 Market Harborough newspaper the Harborough Mail www.harboroughmail.co.uk said that Bing will be in the paper on Jan 17th (Thursday) So thank you Ian.
For the past 2 days Bing has been finding it hard to eat his food. He has been pulling a that hurts face when he tries to swallow. So Ive been adding water into his food which makes it a lot easier for him. I was hoping it was one of those things that would just get better but it didn't seem to. I cant tell you how much Bing hates being on a lead, going out, going in the car and going to the vets. And so I didn't want to take him unless I absolutely had to. But yesterday 10th I took him to the vets and they had a look at his throat. The vet said his throat was dark red and very sore. He was given 2 injections and was told that if he wasn't better by tomorrow then he will need to go back and have steroids. So fingers crossed the injections have worked.
Another piece of advice, this may sound obvious but if your animal is ill, ring your vets and they should say roughly if your animal will get better in time or needs to be seen. Because some people will wait days and then sometimes what could have been treated easily can turn into an emergency. The difference in price between a day time consultation and an evening emergency consultation is about £70. So get your animal insured and micro chipped and any problem ring either the day time vets or emergency vets because that's what we are here for :)
Bing went to the vets again to have a course of anti biotic starting Saturday night and finishing Tuesday morning. Today Sunday 13th Jan his throat is so bad now, even when I put water in his food he is really struggling to eat it. This evening for his second dinner of the day he looked at his food, ran away and tried to hide because he thinks, that makes my throat hurt quick get away from it. So I soaked his food in water for a long time so it turned into sludge and gave it back to him. Eventually he started licking it. I feel so sorry for him, he loves his food and will eat anything but at the moment he wont really eat anything. Once this course has finished I will take him back to the vets for some steroids.

Bing now has his own Bank account. It makes it easier when I raise money for him and I can see now exactly how much I can spend on him. I have had an email about the Bing badges I gave to Jane, Gill and Glynness as a thank you for their lovely gifts. And so here they are, any Bing picture can be used this is just an example. They measure 3cm. If you would like a Bing badge I have enough to make 50. They cost £1.50 each including P&P. If you would like one please email me and let me know which picture you would like, your address and I will give you my paypal email address . I can only accept Paypal. 89p goes to Bing, the rest is P&P, to make the badge and paypal charges.
Today 13th Jan 08 Bing needs:
- Hydrotherapy lessons
- Seeing a specialist about his hearing
- An activity that will stimulate his brain
- Occasional grooming
- Toys he can see
- Somewhere to walk him.
- If you want to help with Hydrotherapy lessons you can either buy a Bing badge which will help cover the cost or next time I have an event for Bing come along and buy lots of things :)
- Again either buy a bing badge or lots of nice things at a Bing event.
- If you are an agility trainer or you think you can train Bing then please email me. I am not looking for anything free please include your prices when you email.
- If you are a dog groomer and you think you can groom Bing without him getting too stressed. Again please email me the price as I will pay all costs.
- If you are out and about and see a toy and think of Bing. Please email me what the toy is and which shop you saw it. And then I can go and buy it.
- If you own a secure, fenced in piece of land, a large barn or somewhere I can let Bing off the lead so he can have a run round without hurting himself, where he cant escape or go to far and where I don't need to worry about any dogs. Please email me and we can come to an arrangement.
Bing went to the vets on Tuesday 15th Jan. The Vet had a look at his throat and said he needed some different anti biotic's and some steroids. He gave him two injections and tablets for 3 days and wanted to see Bing again on Friday.
Friday Morning Bing went to the vets again but unfortunately his throat was no better despite the anti biotic's and steroids and so he was admitted and had to have a general anaesthetic. They took some swabs of the back of his throat and will send them off to a lab. The good news is, it is not anything serious as they were a little concerned it could have been.
I came home from the vets and Darry came running over to me, all happy but then his face changed when he realised I hadn't brought Bing back. He looked for him everywhere. I had to open all the doors, cupboard doors and even the drawers (yes I know) because Darry thought Bing was hiding. He looked for him all around the garden and when he finally came in he looked at me and said " OK, I cant find him but I know he is here some where so I will wait until he comes out of hiding"
I would just like to say a big thank you to everyone who works at Bing's veterinary practice and to Bing's number one fans Anita and Shirley. Thank you all for being so kind to Bing!!!
I collected Bing and bless him he was doing everything the same as normal but just at half the pace. Every so often he would just get really tied and lay down but Darry was at his side the whole day.
Thank you Ian. That is a really lovely piece you wrote about Bing and Darry.

Saturday 27th January. Bing has been fine since the anaesthetic. No results back from the lab yet so he is still on anti biotics. The vet told me they should be back Monday or Tuesday. At the moment he is on Baytril tabs and flexicam which do seem to be working as he can eat a lot better now.
A while ago at work we had in a deaf Staffordshire bull terrier. For legal reasons I cant tell you all the details but it was brought to us as a cruelty case by the RSPCA because we believe the owner didn't realise it was deaf. A few people at work were saying how would you teach it? So the next day I emailed the RSPCA and told them if ever they had in a deaf or blind dog I will either help re home it or if the new owners need help then they can email me. The RSPCA emailed me back and said " I have also circulated your email to our nearby animal centres and inspectorate groups, and other RSPCA colleagues in the surrounding counties."
If I just wanted to be a receptionist I certainly wouldn't work there. I work in a vets because I love animals.and I want to help them.

If you have a question or want some advice about your / a deaf or blind dog. Whoever you are and where ever your from just email me.
bingaug2007@aol.com
I don't just know about deaf and blind dogs:) I do help people with their puppies up to 6 months. So if you want some advice about your puppy you know what to do.
And by the way I don't charge. But if you want to buy Bing a toy or some biscuits, I'm sure he wouldn't object ha ha!
For the past few months I have been looking for a hall to hire. And 1 week ago I found one. The only problem was I was going to hire the hall to help people with their disabled dogs and puppies up to 6 months. The 'owner' of the hall said there was already someone hiring it for dog training but I could still hire it. Being fare I thought I should contact the other dog trainer and explain what I wanted to do. And so I did but to my shock, they were quite rude and said they didn't really want me to hire it because they would loose money. Although I was only going to hire it out for 1 week or so.
They also implied that blind, deaf, disabled and normal dogs are all the same and its a behavioral problem that needs sorting? Well I wish I had never rang them now and just hired the hall. And then it hit me. These people are only in it for the money. I guess that if you went with a dog that had real problems but had no money they wouldn't help you. And that makes me realise how good Theo is. And so if you have a hall or a barn or anything really I could use please email me.
On the 17th of Jan My dad and I went to www.willowsreferrals.co.uk to have
Today the 29th of Jan Bing had to go back to the vets. The vet rang me yesterday to say that the results had come back from the lab. They had found that some of the bacteria from Bing's throat was quite unusual. They recommended he goes back on Synulox anti biotic tablets for the bacteria they recognise. The unusual bacteria will need to be grown and studied as they do not know how to get rid of that. And so the results of that test should be back in 1 week (4th-5th Feb) Very expensive dog I can tell you. The total so far just for his sore throat is £289.10. Bless him he is my little pin cushion.
Bing's birthday is nearly here he will be one on Thursday 31st Jan. I have bought his present. a soft toy and some hide bones. But as I said before if anyone wants to also wish him happy birthday then please email me.
BING'S FIRST BIRTHDAY
31st Jan 2008 Bing is now 1 years old. He had a normal start to the day but in the afternoon my mum and dad came over. He had presents from me and my boyfriend, my mum and dad and a cake from my mum and dad.
From me he had a purple monkey and 3 packs of bones. From my mum and dad he had some dog bubbles and a large hide shoe. And we all had some birthday cake.
Bing also had a lovely present from a girl called Emma. Emma is my mums friends daughter and Emma has been to many dog show with Darry She is a really kind person who loves animals especially Darry and Bing. So thank you Emma , that was really nice of you!!!!
On the 4th of Jan I entered a competition at work. You had to write in about a mad moment (Make A Difference). So I wrote.
Last summer 07 I was looking at all the what's on websites trying to find companion dog shows. Somehow I found a website called Many tears and thought id have a quick look at some of the dogs that needed re homing. And there I saw a 5 month old deaf and 90% blind border collie called Bing. He has a video on youtube http://www.youtube.com/ (Bing needs a home) and after watching it, I knew I had to help him.
On the 29th July my boyfriend and I drove to Llanelli in Wales to meet him with my other dog Darry a 3 year old male Labrador. We fell in love with Bing and decided to adopt him. He is such a good boy with bags of personality, loads of energy and just loves life. He and Darry are the bestest of friends and are always together.
Bing sometimes unfortunately has bleeding behind his eyes and when this happened's he goes totally blind. But so far he has regained his sight within 2 days of having maxitrol eye drops.
I am a part time receptionist, but the knowledge and friends I have gained from work gave me the confidence to take on Bing. Now I try to help anyone who's dog has become deaf or blind. Bing has certainly made a difference in my life and I hope I will make a difference in others. http://www.bing2007.wetpaint.com/

Friday 8th Feb I received the K9 magazine and Bing was in it and has two and a half pages!!!!
http://www.k9magazine.com/viewarticle.php?sid=15&aid=2248
The magazine is £3.95 plus £1.05 P&P total £5.00 but they will combine the P&P costs if you buy more than one magazine. This is from their website.
"Beating Natural Selection – When nature deals you a dud hand, life can be hard. Nothing is truer for Bing, a blind and deaf puppy who is so weak he often tumbles over in a heap. But despite his many problems, Bing has found help in an unusual form and is sidestepping nature’s cruel plan. Truly inspirational."
Perhaps the cruellest part of Bing’s story to date, is that when putting his limitations aside, he is almost a typical Border Collie. Being a Border Collie, the most intelligent and mentally agile breed in the world, Bing has strong herding instincts and loves to work, but he can’t act on those impulses, which makes him visibly upset.

When Bing gets upset, what limited vision he has becomes temporarily removed due to bleeding in his eye. But Bing’s story isn’t one of pity and sadness, he’s got a very dedicated and committed helper who understands his unique needs and struggles. Without the help of his carer Darry, Bing’s life would be one big struggle after the next.
“We saw Bing was looking for a home on a website (many tears rescue), so the first stage was for someone to come out and see if our house was suitable, they only wanted to re-home Bing with a family that had another dog.” Explained Clorissa Paul, Bing’s new owner.
“A few days after the inspection we drove to Llanelli in Wales. We had to take our dog Darry with us to see if he and Bing would get on. My partner and I fell in love with Bing as soon as we saw him. Darry didn't pay any attention to him, which was good enough for us. Bing was laying outside, asleep in the sun. We all walked over to the little white fluffy puppy but we couldn't wake him and realised he was one hundred percent deaf. To wake him we have to either shake him quite hard or make a shadow over his face.”

With Darry’s apparent approval, Clorissa was given the go ahead to take Bing home to start his new life. But the relationship between Darry and Bing didn’t blossom immediately.
“When we got home Darry sniffed Bing all over for hours and kept looking at me as if to say ‘what is going on?’ The next day when Darry realized Bing was still here again he looked at me to say ‘when is he going home?’ Two days later Darry was looking for Bing as soon as he woke up. Five days later they were and are still inseparable. Bing was originally in kennels with lots of other dogs and cats, so he was very used to other animals. The first time he saw Darry we could all tell that he loved him. He would follow him everywhere with an expression on his face that said ‘what are we going to do now? What else are you going to show me?’”
Clorissa knew that caring for Bing would bring with a set of unique challenges, but she wasn’t prepared for just how important Darry would be in helping Bing along.
“Darry has helped Bing in more ways than we will ever realise. In our garden we have a patio and grass. Bing had never been on grass before, as his previous garden had no grass just slabs. So obviously when Bing did go to the toilet, he would do it on the patio. But within one day Darry taught him to go on the grass which he has done ever since. Darry has taught Bing how to behave in the kitchen too. For example, he showed Bing to sit when we are making food in the kitchen, because at first Bing would jump up and just try and take any food he could smell. When I call the dogs in from the garden if Bing sees Darry running in he will follow, but if it is dark or he is not looking the right way then obviously Bing is still in the garden and Darry will come in. If that is the case I say to Darry "Go and get Bing, where's Bing?" and Darry will go back outside, touch Bing and then they both come running in.
A few weeks ago my partner had been shopping and had bought a cooked chicken for himself and the dogs. Bing was outside but Darry was in the kitchen. As soon as my boyfriend got the chicken out and started cutting bits off Darry ran off. We were both very confused as Darry will do anything for chicken and always sits as soon as he can smell it. We watched Darry run into the garden and it was almost as if he said "Bing there is chicken in the kitchen, quick come in" they both ran in as fast as they could and then both sat ready. We could not believe our eyes as we thought Darry would only be too glad Bing wasn't there as that would mean more chicken for him.”
Darry’s influence on Bing didn’t stop at getting his friend involved in the kitchen. Dogs with severe disabilities are often unable to develop the skills needed for domestic life and in many cases require in depth training in order to complete very simple tasks. In Bing’s case, his training came on the job by watching Darry in action.
“We always thought that when a dog was wet, it would instinctively shake to dry itself but Bing never would. He could be so wet, water would be dripping off him and he would just stand there. But one day when they were out in the garden in the rain, Darry came to the back door with Bing and as normal Darry shook himself. Bing tilted his head and we could see he was thinking and then to our surprise he shook himself a little. Now Bing knows exactly what to do to dry himself. “
Bing’s inability to see and hear makes it difficult for him to interact with new dogs. He cannot pick up on body language, which is the main way dogs communicate, so he often finds himself struggling to make new friends.
“About ninety percent of dogs that see Bing are either frightened of him or want to kill him. He was attacked by another dog the first day I had him. A very irresponsible dog owner did not put their dog on a lead and when they saw it attacking Bing they ran off. I then realised how lucky I was that Darry was not like all the other dogs as he loves Bing so much and now couldn't be without him. Bing needs another dog to show him dog things and to play dog games. He still wants cuddles but as there are two of us, the dogs can have as much affection as they want. Bing was taken away from his mother and siblings at six weeks old, so he missed out on lots of things which Darry is now teaching him. He needs another dog to hear and see for him when humans try to communicate. Dogs can communicate with each other without sound, so I tell Darry and Darry tells Bing.”
Despite his remarkably positive and happy temperament, Bing faces new challenges every day and it takes a lot of effort from everyone in involved in caring for him to ensure that he is comfortable and safe.
“He has learnt where everything is in the house now, so we try not to move anything unless we absolutely have to. Bing does not like the car, having a lead on him or being walked. Everyday we show him his lead and he gets biscuits and some days we put his lead on him and walk him to the kitchen and that's it. He feels that wearing a lead means he has no choices and going outside for a walk is too much, too many smells, too much to take in and too much to worry about. When he is calm his eye sight is about ten percent effective, but when he is stressed it is almost like he is totally blind. You can not walk him, steer him in a direction or get through to him. When he gets stressed he sometimes has bleeding behind his eye. The vet’s think he has a blood clotting disorder. When this happens he goes totally blind for about two days. His personality changes. He walks slow, doesn't join in and just looks sad. We have been told that if he keeps having bleeding behind his eye eventually he will loose his sight forever. We spend all of our time trying to make him calm and relaxed so hopefully he will have his ten percent vision all his life.”
Bing’s physical problems are the result of poor breeding. Whilst Bing manages to make the most of his situation with the help of Darry, it is regrettable that he was born in the state that he was. Clorissa sees the positive side of Bing’s situation, but is very aware that Bing’s problems could have been avoided.
“I have been told by most vets that puppies that are not developed correctly usually don't survive birth. But if they do the mother will not feed them and they will die. Or the breeders will take the sick puppy to the vets to be euthanized. Bing is a miracle and is lucky to be alive. Some might say ‘is it fair?’ but Bing has a life, a very happy life. He is not suffering and is not in any pain. He doesn't know that he can’t hear or can’t se, it is all he has ever known. ‘Should Bing have been put down?’ If you know the puppy is not suffering and you can find it a home then fine. But otherwise no, euthanasia would have been best as no animal should ever suffer. ‘Did Bing's breeders do the right thing by Bing?’ In this case I think they did but they must never breed from the same two dogs again.”
There is no ‘owner’s guide to caring for a blind and deaf pup’, so Clorissa is learning as she goes along. She knows Bing will never see, but with the help of family, friends and Darry, she is finding ways to make Bing happy.
“We buy toys that we know he can see. They either have to be bright in colour or large in size. Being a border collie he loves playing with balls, but spends such a long time trying to find them he often just gives in. We have bought him a ball that changes colour and he can see that like a normal dog. We can roll it and he knows exactly where it is. We have taken him to an eye specialist to see if they could improve Bing's sight in anyway and sadly they can’t, but at least now we know. There are many more things that Bing needs so we have had a bazaar to raise money for him. He does cost a lot of money, so I will organise more events for him as the last fundraiser generated enough money for a dog trainer. He still needs to go to a hearing specialist, hydrotherapy lessons for his back legs and we need to find a groomer. So if anyone wants to help Bing, he wouldn't say no.”
Instinct is important to any dog and Bing is no different. His blindness and deafness have forced Bing to adapt, but in many ways his confidence and curiosity belies his limitations.
“The first time we saw Bing I said to his foster carer ‘Are you sure he is deaf and blind?’ I expected him to be very slow and deliberate and not running round like a mad thing. I also never expected him to pull on the lead, again I thought he would walk by my side as he wouldn't know where he was going. But he pulls like a train. With Bing it is trial and error, he will run and if he runs into something, he picks himself up and thinks ‘ok now I know there is something there.’ We try so hard but we can’t always keep up with him. We obviously don't want him running into things but can’t always stop him. He is just like any other life loving little dog, sometimes he get cuts and bruises, but not very often. He is very limp and when he does run into something he just ends up in a little heap on the floor, so as yet has never really hurt himself.
He wants to learn and be as normal as Darry. If he could talk he would say ‘I can do it, watch me everyone, see I am a good boy, what's next to do, what can you teach me now?’ He has a very active brain and from the second he wakes up he runs, he has no idea where, but just runs, wags his tail and says ‘right what have a missed?’”
Darry is going to give blood again Saturday 23rd February at Celtic Cross Vets in Corby. If you would like to take your dog please ring 01509 232 222 to book a time. I am also volunteering as a helper for the day. I am going to be doing some tummy tickling. The address is: Celtic Cross Veterinary Centre, Wood Street, Corby Northamptonshire NN17 1PT
www.petbloodbankuk.org/
On Saturday 23rd of Feb Darry went to give blood at Celtic cross vets. He was very good just like last time. Around 12.30pm to my surprise Northants 96 black thunder came to take some pictures. (thats me holding the lead with the red V neck dark blue work top just incase you didn't know) www.northants96.co.uk/photoWallphoto.asp?SearchString=&wallid=36924
This picture was taken just after he had given blood, thats why he has the white bandage around his neck.
Also he is wearing a halti (gentle leader) because after giving blood its best not to have your dog on a collar or chain etc.

Bing is going to be in Pick Me Up magazine on the 3rd of April.
www.pickmeupmagazine.co.uk/
They are giving Bing some money and that is going towards hydrotherapy lessons and a hearing specialist along with the money raised at the bazaar
Bing is going to be in Dogs Today Magazine for May for the Good boy good dog award.
He is going to receive a hamper of good boy treats. which I'm sure he wont mind sharing with Darry.
www.dogstodaymagazine.co.uk/
Bing loves to sleep in this position or with his back legs up the wall or sofa.
But he also likes to sleep all curled up like a cat.
Darrys favourite position to lay is what we call the rug. He does not sleep on our bed but when I am on the computer or upstairs he will take over the whole bed while he can. But he is very good and when I tell him 'off' he does it.
Bing is a very outdoor type dog. He prefers to drink from puddles than from a fresh water bowl. He absolutely loves mud. He loves to dig he scrapes and then jumps up to try and catch the earth and he will eat it if I don't stop him, he comes in with mud all on his face, nose and has mud all over his teeth and tongue.
Darry is the opposite if the water is not fresh he wont really drink it. And once out on a walk he held his paw up and cried. I thought he may have trod on something so I wiped off the mud from his paw and then he walked off and I realised he didn't want the mud on his paw. When I get back from walking Darry he will spend ages cleaning his paws even though I always wipe his paws before he comes in.

When I volunteered at the pet blood bank a gentleman came with his 7 greyhounds and yes all 7 gave blood. They were all so well behaved, nice, calm, laid back and just wanted attention and cuddles. To be honest I was quite amazed as I had never really met anyone who owned a greyhound before. They may run fast but they still want to be loved and looked after the same if not more than some other dogs. Please see the website www.thebeastlybeasts.co.uk (Thank you both for coming to the Bing Bazaar if ever you hold anything again or need my help just ask!!)

Bing had to have a bath because he came in from the garden yellow. His head and down his back was yellow, wet and smelly. I'm sure you can guess what happened. Darry will always cock his leg but Bing does not. I don't think he will ever be able to as he can not stand on 3 legs. Darry will go to the toilet and Bing loves to run. He will run up and down the garden all day if he could.

These pictures were taken 23rd March 2008
Darry has seen snow before. He just loves running round and round the garden as fast as he can slipping all over the place and then stopping to sniff a bit and then back to running again.
Bing has not seen snow before and when I first let him out, as soon as his feet touched the snow he turned around and came straight back in. Eventually he came out after all of us having to stand outside with him.
All he wanted to do was eat it. One little mouthful is not going to kill him but he would have eaten the whole garden if I had have let him.
I wouldn't say he didn't like the snow, more he didn't understand it. Because it was all gone a few hours later he just accepted it. If it is there is it, if it isn't then it isn't. Darry on the other hand was looking for it. He didn't understand how it could go so quickly. If you have any pictures of your dog in the snow I would love to see them and maybe I could put a few pictures on this website. Please send them to Bingaug2007@aol.com and let me know if you want them on this site.

He is very good and will just stand there and let us wash him. But does look rather sorry for himself.
He loves to be dried and loves having a towel on him although it may not look like it in this picture. If they outside and it is raining I call them in and hold a towel and Bing comes running over to be dried.
He doesn't mind being dried with a dryer as long as it is done quick. But being brushed is a no. He just runs and runs. There is only one brush we can use on him but having a bath, being dried is enough he really doesn't like it but if I brush him and nothing else he is fine and even likes it and lays down to let me brush his belly. Saying that he has NEVER growled or bitten. He just runs away.
And yes Darry is with him, he is always with him no matter what. They are friends for life.

Monday 7th April 2008 you could say was a slightly different day than normal. Yes the day has come, Bing is going to be on the TV.
I had an email from a lady from dog in a box. http://doginabox.com/ A TV and film production company. They wanted Bing for Animal planets Animal Crackers.
On the 7th A lovely camera lady came over about 11.30am to film all four of us. It was a dry warm day so we were very lucky and got some great footage outside in the sheep fields on a walk and of Bing and Darry playing in the garden.
This will be aired in the summer around July August they think but as soon as I have a date I will let you know.
Overall I thought the whole day went really well. Bing was his usual shelf which was great, he wasn't put off by the camera at all and Darry, well what can I say. He did everything I asked. I couldn't of wished for him to have been any better.

This is my friend Katie who lives in Australia. She loves dogs and helps out at her local RSPCA please see her website http://doggerbloggy.blogspot.com/
Today 9th April I had an email from the editor of 'Hondenleven' magazine, one of the leading dog magazines in The Netherlands and Belgium. They would like to feature this website on their special website-page called 'WWWoef'. And are planning to mention this site in their July issue that will be published mid June. They kindly said they would send me a copy.

I am very pleased to say that at last Bing and Darry have their own video on You Tube. Firstly the videos took ages to make and then they were not in the right format for You Tube and had to be converted but finally last night 13th April I did it.
